Invest in the Future with Jóvenes Adelante

University scholarship student Karina on the trip to Japan she won in her first semester

By Robin Loving

At this time of year, many of our thoughts turn philanthropic.  The average philanthropic gift per year in the US for retirees is around US$1,500 per year.  An annual gift of US$1,440 or equivalent per year can ensure a year of university for one of San Miguel’s brightest, most economically challenged students!  That’s about the cost of a cup of coffee at a coffee shop each day. Donations such as this have helped more than 200 students bring their families out of poverty in the past 14 years, and more!

Jovenes Adelante graduates are contributing to the Mexican economy in personal services such as dentistry and nutrition counseling in San Miguel, and law and employment services.  Our grads are also in consumer products and services such as fashion and bath/kitchen supplies, as well as in management in Rosewood in Cancun!  In administration and business management, we have grads working in international commerce and accounting.  In engineering, JA grads are working in mining, dairy production, PEMEX, software, and electrical engineering.

In government services, our grads are working with universities and the local municipality.  And in nonprofits, we have Diana, our administrative assistant, whose dad is a farmer at Corral de Piedras. Diana did her unpaid social service with us and turned down paid work because this gave her a better opportunity to apply the philosophy she had learned in her education degree.  When we had an opening, she was the most qualified for the actual job!

But enough about our grads for a moment.  Let me tell you about Karina, who is in her first semester as a JA scholarship student and just won a trip to Japan from her school!  She is studying industrial relations and won the trip due to her leadership and social project work.

We do not commit a scholarship to any student until we have that scholarship fully funded by either the full donation or a pledge to pay over a period of up to five years. If you plan to make yearly payments, please do so as a pledge so that we will know and can fund a student in the next school year. We offer tax deductibility in the US and Canada, and all details may be found at JovenesAdelante.org.  And, we collaborate  proudly with all the other scholarship programs in San Miguel. On behalf of our outstanding Jóvenes Adelante students, thank you for investing in the future!

I just saw a thought for the day: Go out there and be amazing!  Our students are doing this.  We could fund only 11 of the 58 who qualified last year.  Let’s see how many we can support this year.  Fifteen is our goal for our 15th year!  Please contact me at robin@robinloving.com, 152 3709 in SMA, or 925 476 8117.
