Writers’ Conference Announces Two New Events
By Lee Bellavance Diamond
We’ve come to expect a veritable smorgasbord of offerings from the annual San Miguel Writers’ Conference: keynote addresses, workshops, parties, readings, excursions, literary celebrities, plays, book signings, and lectures. But the upcoming 2016 conference, February 10 to 14, 2016, has outdone itself with two new special events—a film premiere and a Storytelling Festival.

On February 11 at 8pm, the world premiere of the feature-length film Rituales will be shown in the auditorium of Bellas Artes. Four epic poems by inter-disciplinary artist Tim Hazell are brought to life in the film, using acting, dance, spectacular sets, and multi-camera effects.
The 65-minute film, which took two years to complete, is a multifaceted version of the play by the same name, which debuted in 2013. It is subtitled in both Spanish and English, so it is fully bilingual. The film features piano improvisations by composer Ken Bichel, surreal cinematography by Bernard Czelakowski, and ephemeral set designs by Lilia Trapaga, who also directed the actors.
Rituales, the poem, the play, and now the film, is the creation of the prolific and award-winning writer, composer, producer, educator, columnist, author, and visual artist, Tim Hazell. “Rituales truly represents poetry manifested on stage and captured on film; provocative, groundbreaking, engaging, and above all, exciting!” said one reviewer. Tickets are available on the Conference website.
Storytelling at the Writers’ Conference!
Storytelling has taken San Miguel by storm, and we are excited to introduce it to the Writers’ Conference in 2016. The Conference Storytelling Fest, jointly produced by the San Miguel Writers’ Conference and the San Miguel Storytellers, is slated for Sunday, February 14, from 1:30 to 3pm in the ballroom of the Hotel Real de Minas. Individual tickets are available on the conference website or in person at Literary Sala events.
The event will be hosted by Dinty Moore, who is such a beloved personality and great writing teacher that he has been on the faculty of the Writers’ Conference for the last five years!
The Conference Storytelling Fest will feature seven of the finest storytellers we could assemble, including Luis Urrea, one of the most captivating keynoters the conference has ever presented; Béa Aaronson, legendary and award-winning storyteller; Diana Spechler, who has won awards at the international storytelling venue The Moth; Carol Merchasin, whose recent Literary Sala presentation, “Hasta la Vista Donald Trump” won her a standing ovation; Nathan Feuerberg, winner of our local storytelling festival in 2014; Dene Maria Stratiana, whose storytelling is legendary; and Eduardo Mora, whose poignant story brought the audience at our local event to tears and then to rousing cheers.
Packages and tickets still available
A few full conference packages are still available. The conference is a literary festival as well as a writers’ conference, and we encourage avid readers as well as writers to attend the full conference. Every time we break into smaller workshops, we always hold a session in our “The Pleasures of Reading” series, designed specifically for readers. Our popular basic package had sold out, but because of loud clamoring for more, we have opened up 15 more basic packages. Full conference packages, which include all the social events, are still available, as are the “Whole Enchilada” packages, which include two three-hour intensive writing workshops by our extraordinary teaching faculty. All of our keynote speakers, the Rituales movie, and the Storytelling Fest are open to the public by individual ticket.
For information about all of the above events and the conference in general, to register for conference packages, or to purchase tickets to individual events, visit our website at www.sanmiguelwritersconference.org. To purchase tickets in person, contact Nathan Feuerberg at firstname.lastname@example.org.
