Whenever pianist/composer/Fulbright scholar Don Grusin takes the stage, he plays with grace, finesse, wit, and love. That’s why Quincy Jones, Sergio Mendes, Peggy Lee, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nacimento, Oscar Castro-Neves, Ivan Lins, Bela Fleck, Patti Austin, and dozens of other musical geniuses have chosen to work at his side over the years.
It’s why he’s won three Grammy awards in the Jazz and World Music categories. It’s why 36 master musicians in Brazil and Latin America came together in 2000 to record Don’s brainchild, called “Tocando Tierra–a Tribute to Latin American Music.”
Joining Don onstage for this concert will be one of Mexico City’s bona fide jazz superstars, vocalist Iraida Noriega. If you haven’t heard Iraida sing yet, I bet you know someone who is still raving about her performances with Ken Bichel and me earlier this year. Iraida is an unforgettable sorceress of sound who combines lyrics, melody, and rhythm in ways that I’ve never heard before. And she’s fun up there, not just another diva, but rather a true musical partner to her fellow players.
I always play my best when I perform with Iraida and Don (we’ve shared the stage two other times, I’m proud to say). On this occasion, I’ll be playing piano, keyboard, and percussion, striving to add a unique sonic dimension to the proceedings. I also plan to unveil the finished version of my newest composition, the poignant “Paris in December.”
Don, Iraida, and I will play our hearts out to celebrate 45 years of Patronato Pro Niños’ work to provide medical and dental care to poor Mexican children. There are so many great nonprofit organizations here in San Miguel, but how many have a legacy that impressive? You can help them continue their work just by buying a ticket and letting us entertain you.
We’ve gone to great lengths to make this evening unforgettable, starting with the music itself and the bar in the lobby. You also might be an “instant winner” of our CDs just by showing up and getting a little lucky! As you take your seat, please take a good look at the sponsors in our printed program—without their help, none of this would be possible.
And the same goes for you. Come and bring your friends to enjoy Don Grusin, Iraida Noriega, and me as we play our best for you.
Tickets are going fast at the Peralta box office and at La Conexión’s Aldama office. VIP tickets—those are the side box seats—include a free drink from the bar, but every ticket has an equal chance of winning CDs.
