Safety Empowerment with Horses Workshop
By Janis McDonald and Marti McGinnis
After creating my ranch life, “Living with Horses,” I dreamed of connecting my two passions: being with horses and helping people live the best, healthiest life they can by offering an empowering experience for women. The answer came when I met Marti McGinnis, a fellow horsewoman, artist, and equine assisted learning (EAL) facilitator. We met during a time of increasing concerns about safety in San Miguel de Allende, which had elevated our own levels of fear (past, present, and future). Marti and I agreed we wanted to turn these negatives into a positive by creating a one day experience to help other women in the community feel safer. Together we have created a full day addressing what we feel is a growing fear of simply being a woman in San Miguel.

Personal power can be found in becoming aware of your body language and how your thoughts create the space around you. When participating in carefully designed activities with horses at liberty (free in a fenced-in space) people have the opportunity to discover enlightening breakthroughs in old thought patterns. They find these 1,200-pound creatures respond to the lightest of gestures that represent a person’s strong intention. This experience brings home viscerally a self-knowledge of power inherent in us all that we can project to the outside world.
Horses at liberty seem to have an innate and profound ability to “know” what a person needs to experience in a safe and guided activity. Being in their presence can inspire self-confidence. Equine assisted learning uses horses’ natural abilities to react to physical and emotional manifestations of fears and other unhealthy thought patterns under safe and fun conditions. Being with them is calming and interacting with them as equals is inspirational and empowering. When free to express themselves without hindrances horses are honest messengers reflecting body language and emotion back to those they are with.
In this workshop you will learn how to alter your public demeanor and presence and how to apply this information to your daily life here in San Miguel, to substantially decrease your chances of becoming a victim.
After lunch we’ll revisit our discussion and deepen our understanding of the information being with horses has given us, using this as the basis for a creative project designed to synthesize new thinking into a beautiful, physical reminder of the day’s inspirations. The workshop will end with real information on how to stay safe in San Miguel!
Marti and I will facilitate this workshop Saturday, December 12, 9:30am–4:30pm at Rancho Waena, San Miguel de Allende, US$125 or 2,000 pesos which includes a locally grown organic lunch. Our day starts off with a “surprise” first step to help you arrive at my ranch. Please email if you are interested in learning more: email@example.com or through my website: www.livelikeyoucan.com.
