Rotarians Unite for Community Good and Fellowship
Earlier in 2015 this magical town we call home enjoyed a marvelous visit from a merry group from Eugene Southtowne, Oregon. The group consisted of accountants, doctors, past Peace Corps volunteers, a law enforcement officer, and some business owners. They all share a passion to do good things and to help others, as they are all fine Rotarians, and along with their partners, enjoy initiating “Acts of Kindness.”
The purpose of the visit was primarily to support and help Escuela de Educación Especial (School for Special Education, a non-profit founded in 2011 in San Miguel de Allende) through a Rotary International approved grant. The grant provided communication therapy for several of the students, books for the school library (aimed toward middle school students), and equipment and instruction for several of the vocational training programs for older students. Programs in carpentry, cooking/baking, sewing, and jewelry-making teach older students job skills. The visiting Rotarians helped out with computer classes and, following some basic sign language instruction, shared classroom time and laughter with the students and faculty.
The visitors brought joy and caring to those at EEE, and all enjoyed a great cultural exchange with our neighbors from north of the border.
During the weeklong visit local Rotarians from the San Miguel Mid-day Club shared fellowship with its guests. A trip to Cañada de la Virgen pyramid was enjoyed, as were visits to the Stove Team International factory in La Cienguita and to Charlie Hall’s wonderful glass and candle factory near Atotonilco. A brief trip was made to local rural communities providing much needed and hoped-for gifts of little toys for the children of El Tigre as well as books for the preschool in a small community close to La Cienaguita.
All in all it was a memorable visit for all at EEE and for our community. These “service above self ” individuals represent the embodiment of Rotary by doing so many good deeds during their stay. All those touched by their generosity will be forever grateful for their support.
This is the fourth visit to San Miguel initiated by the Southtowne Eugene Oregon Rotary Club, and we truly hope that they will visit many more times.
