DreamWorks to Build Riviera Maya Theme Park
DreamWorks has gained the green light from Riviera Maya officials to build a theme park in the Mexican tourist destination. The park will be built on 7.5 hectares in the Punta Maroma area with construction beginning next year. Estimates put the initial investment for the amusement park at US$800 million.
Tourism officials believe that the new DreamWorks theme park will draw tourists from South America who will bypass parks in the United States in favor of the attraction in Riviera Maya.
DreamWorks is still waiting for the final permits to clear, but initial plans indicate the theme park will be similar to the company’s attraction inside American Dream Meadowlands in the New York/New Jersey area.
It’s expected to feature rides, theaters, restaurants, and retail shops and will have a bounty of appearances and themes from DreamWorks’ roster of popular animated characters, including stars of hit movies like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar.
450-Year-Old Mexican Church Emerges from Reservoir
The ruins of a 16th century church have emerged from the Nezahualcóyotl reservoir in Chiapas state. The water level has dropped by 82 feet because of a drought in the area. The church, known as the Temple of Santiago or the Temple of Quechula, has been under water since 1966. It was built in approximately 1564 by Spanish colonists and was abandoned after plague hit the area between 1773 and 1776.
“Spectre” Themed Planes
The Mexican airline Interjet has teamed with filmmakers to offer a unique opportunity to fly in a plane designed with logos from the new James Bond movie Spectre. EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment partnered with Interjet in the modification of two airplanes using themes from the new 007 film.
The two aircraft—both Airbus 320s—are adorned with logos from the Spectre movie and made their first flights October 30. One plane will fly an international route from New York to Mexico City, and the other will handle flights to Huatulco and Culiacan in Mexico and to Bogotá, Colombia.
In addition to the paint jobs, the flights to and from Mexico will also feature behind-the-scenes materials from the new James Bond film that will be accessible to passengers for six weeks following the release.
LGBT-Dedicated Cruise Line Launches
Anteros Cruises, a new cruise line dedicated to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, announced it will launch service with Mediterranean and Caribbean sailings in April 2017. The cruise line will cater to all LGBT members as well as their families and friends with a brand promise to be “as inclusive as it is exclusive.”
The Miami-based line said sailings would be onboard an intimate, 400-passenger luxury yacht-like ship featuring celebrity-designer interior spaces, attentive service from a greater than average crew-to-guest ratio, fine dining, signature amenities, custom shore excursions, and itineraries in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
The small ship will sail 5-14 day journeys with a wide range of cruise fares to accommodate many budgets. During the summer, Mediterranean homeports will be Barcelona and Piraeus (Athens), and during the winter, Caribbean homeports will be St. Maarten and Colon, Columbia. Itineraries are being developed to coincide with LGBT events such as PRIDE.
