Canon White Returns for Annual Lecture Series

By The Rt. Rev. William O. Gregg

St. Paul’s Anglican Church is immensely pleased to invite the San Miguel de Allende community to this year’s series given by the Rev. Canon John A. White OCV. Canon White returns to present another stimulating and thoughtful series of lectures followed by open conversation. His topic is timely and poignant: “Politics, Religion, and Violence–an Unresolved Problem of our Generation.”

Lecture Series
Canon John White OCV
Thu, Nov 12–Fri Nov 13, 10:15am–3pm
Sat Nov 14, 10:15 am–5pm
St. Paul’s Anglican Church
Cardo 6
200 pesos/day; 100 pesos per session

In each presentation, Canon White will present a way of looking at each of these factors, followed by open conversation, which he thinks of as the most important part of the series. His goal is to evoke thoughtful responses as we explore these topics and their relationships, taking into a deeper consideration the concrete realities of today’s world. Nowhere in the world is untouched by the combination of politics, religion, and violence, ostensibly the product of religious beliefs and practices. Whether one is religious or spiritual, practicing or not, politics, religion, and violence shape the daily existence of all of us.

Canon White is gifted at clearly sifting through complex issues and ideas that stimulate robust conversations. Through the presentations and conversations, we want, at the end of the day, to have grown to a greater understanding and a clearer sense of what we, in our particular worlds, can actually do to make our world a safer, more peaceful place to live. This really is important work for the world in general and for us here in San Miguel de Allende. So, come to listen to the thinking of a man well-schooled in articulate presentation of engaging ideas and join us for vigorous conversation.

Canon White served as Canon of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, from 1982, by appointment of the Queen and upon retirement was awarded the Commander of the Victorian Order for his service by the Queen. He was charged with clergy continuing education, with special attention to social responsibility and action. As Canon Precentor of St. George’s, he was responsible for all liturgies in the chapel. He also served as Canon Treasurer and Librarian, editing the monograph series produced through the library.

Canon White has lectured widely in the UK, the US, and México. He has a deep interest in music, both as a composer, as Chair of the Windsor Music Festival, and as a trustee of the Manchester Academy of Arts. He serves as chair of Together With Children, an English charity that supports JUNCONI, a program for street children in Puebla, which he visits annually.
