Tribute to Blues Legends and Cuban Jazz
By Maria Dolores Vidargas
As in previous years, the San Miguel Jazz Cats will present a tribute concert at the 21st San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival, on this occasion honoring great blues legends. The concert will be held at the Angela Peralta Theater on Saturday, November 14, at 8 pm and will also feature guest performers. Among the great musicians whose music will be heard are Muddy Waters, BB King, Ben E. King, John Lee Hooker, and Robert Johnson.
The director of the festival, Antonio Lozoya, will participate in the concert. He is a graduate of the Escuela Superior de Musica of Mexico City and is the recipient of a 2014 grant from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA). We will also have the participation of a small tap-dancing company, Percutap, which has received great acclaim both nationally and internationally.
Closing this edition of the San Miguel International Jazz and Blue Festival will be the “Jazz Cubano” concert, featuring two important Cuban musicians, Alfred Thompson on saxophone and Gabriel Hernández at the piano. They will be accompanied by the Cuban trumpeter Alex Guardiola and, from Mexico, the percussionists Armando “Jimmy” Jimenez and Julián Mendieta and the bassist Rubén Olvera.
Thompson is the winner of two Grammy Awards, one with the Cuban group Irakere and the other with The Buena Vista Social Club. He is the arranger and director of the group Habana Ensemble and was recently the musical director of the Cuban diva Omara Portuondo of The Buena Vista Social Club. Hernandez has played with such musical greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Hargrove, and Bob Sheppard. He has been taking part in a number of world tours with the Afro-Cuban All Stars orchestra.
Part of the proceeds of this concert, which will take place at Bellas Artes on November 15 at 7 pm, will be donated to la Fundación de Apoyo Infantile. That day will also see the closing of the free film cycle at Bellas Artes at noon.
Tickets are available from the Angela Peralta box office and from La Conexion at Aldama 3. For more information, visit our website at www.sanmigueljazz.com.mx.
