Senior Pets Are Celebrated in November
From the SPA
By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero
November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, in which shelters emphasize the benefits of adopting an older pet instead of a puppy or kitten. Because senior pets are fully grown and their personalities are developed, there are few surprises and many rewards from giving them a chance to become part of a family. They are particularly appropriate adoption choices for the more mature person who would love to experience the joy of pet ownership but probably doesn’t have the energy level for a younger animal. Often overlooked at shelters, senior dogs or cats are ready to become your devoted companions for the rest of their lives.
Güera has been at the Sociedad Protectora de Animales (SPA) since 2009. Although she’s eight years old, she still has plenty of time to bring much happiness to your life. She is shy with new people and would be best as the only animal, but she is easy to walk, very loving, and truly deserving of a forever home where she can give and receive love. Susie, now six and a half, is a medium-large dog that walked into the SPA on her own in 2011 and that first night gave birth to nine puppies! She needs a home where she is the only dog, and the home should have an enclosed, high-walled area (she can climb!). Super smart, she adores human adults and is fiercely loyal.
About four or five years old, Lorenzo was found rummaging through neighborhood trash cans. We are sure he had a home before his life on the streets. He is so easy with people that he must have had quite a lot of human interaction in his past. A mellow pale-orange boy, he’d love a second chance at a real home. Although not a senior citizen, Lenny has an old soul. He arrived as a very timid seven-week-old and, after months of petting and attention, has finally discovered that the world outside his private cubbyhole is pretty nice. Now seven months old, he relishes petting time. It has been very rewarding to watch his progression from being a scaredy-cat to an engaging cat. Featuring unique white whiskers on one side of his face, this black boy is a charmer.
Adopt (400 pesos) any of these Pets of the Month during November and receive a free adoption kit. Preview all our available animals at www.spasanmiguel.org (Adopt Me! pages) and meet them at Los Pinos 7, Monday–Saturday, 11am–2pm. Celebrate November by bringing a senior pet into your life.
