Mai Onno: “Primordial Vision” at Carral Espacio, Fábrica la Aurora

By Marilo Carral

Cati Demme writes of Mai Onno’s recent work, “These are not merely paint on canvas; they are doorways, entrances, to a discrete yet universal vision which exist in its own dimension … Primordial form, sweeping gesture, sagacious, dancing line … redolent color: oozing red, bubbling effervescent green, luminous liquid yellow, rising blue and black, pure as bituminous coal and deep as a sentinel rising from the earth’s core having the final say. Others try to achieve what is done here, but it is simply beyond their reach and comprehension, as to exactly what this achievement has actually entailed: the entire process, the total immersion, in both the depths and the heights, the willingness to be as indefatigable as Phoenix Rising, once again renewed, undefeated, and raising its ashen wings to the rising blue.”
