Reimagining the String Quartet Experience: “en Stil Moderno”
By Orlando Aguilar Velázquez
Within the framework of activities of the Baroque Music Festival of San Miguel de Allende, the “Baroque Notes” concert series presents the refreshingly fearless quartet “En StilModerno” (in the modern style). This performance brings to San Miguel a collaboration among four international soloists who have come together to perform a program of extraordinary breadth and creativity. Rebecca Huber (Holland), Evan Few (USA), Rafael Sanchez (Mexico), Christophe Gauthier (Canada), violins, viola da gamba and harpsichord respectively, interpret music.
Sat, Oct 24, 5pm
Santa María del Obraje
Calzada de la Presa 90
Performing the music of great composers such as Corelli, Purcell, Frescobaldi and Buxtehude, this concert will transport you to the seventeenth century with a commitment that truly defies genre. In the early seventeenth century these courageous composers innovated new ways to make and listen to music, and to their amazement, they were able to master the emotions of their listeners. This, “new” language emerged from the fusion of elements from aristocratic and folk dances, opera, and sacred music, mixed in a refined and diverse melting pot.
The concert will be held Saturday October 24 at 5pm in the beautiful Obraje chapel. This quaint venue dates from the eighteenth century and became part of the former Hacienda del Obraje, now known locally as Centro Cultural Santa María del Obraje. This chapel is located near the center of San Miguel, on Calzada de la Presa 90, and emulates concert halls of the era, offering perfect acoustics in such an intimate place that the public practically shares the stage with artists.
The “Baroque Notes” series will end at the Obraje Chapel on Friday, October 30 at 7pm with a harpsichord recital by award- winning Italian harpsichordist Francesco Corti. Maestro Corti plays regularly with the main orchestras in Europe, like Mozarteum Orchester in Salzburg and Les Musicianes du Louvre in Paris. Francesco Corti is also given the special distinction of being invited to play every year during the Mozartwoche Festival in Salzburg the original Walter fortepiano once owned by Mozart. The program chosen by Mr. Corti shows both great beauty and amazing virtuoso playing and will surely be a unique event in San Miguel.
Tickets for both events are on sale at Smart Space Hub (Salida a Celaya, 34), La Conexión (Aldama 3), and in the Biblioteca (Insurgentes 25). For more information, visit the website of the Baroque Music Festival of San Miguel de Allende: www.baroqueconcerts.com
