Seed Swap and Local Seeds

By Jennifer Ungemach

Join us on Saturday, October 24, for seed sharing and fun at the Saturday Organic and Artisanal Market (TOSMA). SOMOS Semilla is a community initiative to promote seed saving in the region. Its principal goal is to establish a community seed library that all can access.

SOMOS Semilla
Seed Swap and Local Seeds
Sat, Oct 24, 9am-3pm

The day’s activities include a seed swap scheduled for 11am. Bring seeds grown in your garden or extra seeds that you have purchased to exchange.

Dr. Ernesto Preciado, an expert corn breeder from the INIFAT, will speak about his work and the importance of preserving corn varieties in the region at 1pm. The presentation, entitled “Native Mexican Corns: Distribution, Conservation, Uses and Risks” will be in Spanish with translation provided.

Activities for children include morning workshops on seed “bombs” and worm composting.

Thanks to support from the Institute of Ecology at the UNAM, the SOMOS Semilla project is pleased to be able to coordinate free testing for GMO modification in corn samples. Bring 200 grams of grain or three ears of corn to be tested. We hope that producers will use this service to be able to certify their local varieties as GMO-free, or if contamination should be present, to be able to act appropriately. You may submit samples at the Via Orgánica stand or at Via Orgánica in the following weeks.
