San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival

By Antonio Lozoya

We are pleased to announce the 21st San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival, which will take place November 11-15. It is considered one of the outstanding festivals of its type in Mexico and one of the most important in Latin America because of its broad scope.

On this occasion the festival is crowned with the presence of some great musicians, some of them Grammy Award-winners. One such is Alfred Thompson, an extraordinary musician who has played with important Cuban groups such as Irakere, directed by the pianist Chucho Valdés, and the orchestra of Ibraham Ferrer of the Buena Vista Social Club. For the kick-off of the festival we count on the participation of the Steven Koven trio, one of the most solid groups of the present moment in Canada, with Anthony Mitchell on drums and Rob Clutton on bass, all of them with plenty of experience and international recognition.

That revelation of the blues world, the New York guitarist and singer King Solomon Hicks, will be returning. Among his outstanding releases is the one he made with the Cotton Club All Stars Band.

Also in the lineup is Danny Marks, a great blues singer from Canada who was recently honored by the Toronto Blues Society, and Percutap, a tap-dancing group. A concert, “Tribute to Blues Legends,” will be presented by the San Miguel Jazz Cats, directed by Antonio Lozoya, bass, in a program featuring special guests and music by such greats as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Ben E. King, Freddie King, BB King, and Robert Johnson.

In addition to the concerts, there are a number of free events, both musical and visual, including an exhibit by the great Mexican photographer Fernando Aceves. We will once again present our traditional Jazz Workshop, aimed at all the public, where the elements of this musical language will be addressed.

We invite you to join us at the 21st San Miguel International Jazz and Blues Festival, with its free events and concerts with tickets at reasonable prices, where you are assured of an unforgettable experience. Tickets are available at the Ángela Peralta box office. More information is available at www.sanmigueljazz.com.mx.
