The Secrets of the Vatican

Secrets of the Vatican

By David Johanssen

In recent years, the Vatican has been rocked by scandals: links to the Sicilian Mafia, arrests over gay prostitution rings, the theft and sale of newborn babies (their mothers were told the babies died during childbirth), the murder of a parishioner by a priest in southern Italy, and a multitude of child sexual abuse cases. Pope Francis has sworn to reform the Catholic Church and fight corruption in the Vatican. He has been called the most progressive Pope in history.

Join us for a documentary and discussion Friday, October 2, at 4 pm as we present Secrets of the Vatican. Frontline tells the epic inside story of the collapse of the Benedict papacy and illuminates the extraordinary challenges facing Pope Francis as he tries to reform the powerful Vatican bureaucracy, root out corruption, and chart a new course for the troubled Catholic Church and its 1.2 billion followers. 50 pesos.

After the documentary we will discuss Secrets of the Vatican as well as Pope Francis’s recent visit to the US. Should Congress act now to battle climate change? Should the US accept more Muslim refugees from Syria and the Middle East? Is it just to redistribute wealth from the United States to third world countries? Will Pope Francis disclose that the Vatican has knowledge of intelligent life in the universe?  Recently, Pope Francis said that he would baptize aliens from another planet or another galaxy, “If, for example, tomorrow an expedition of Martians came to us here and one said ‘I want to be baptized!’ what would happen?”

Saturday, October 3, at 4 pm: Ayahuasca: Vine of the Soul. Join us for a documentary and discussion on Ayahuasca. On a quest for spiritual awakening and healing, a naturopathic doctor and an accountant join others in the Amazon to drink a hallucinogenic brew called Ayahuasca, or “vine of the soul.” Their dramatic encounters with the sacred medicine offer new insights into the nature of faith and self-healing through a heightened state of consciousness. 50 pesos.

Shelter Theater is part of the Shelter VG4 Cultural Center, located at Vicente Guerrero 4, a 10-minute walk from the Jardín down Insurgentes, 154 7524 or visit to see upcoming events.
