Playreaders to Present A Walk in the Woods
By BC May
A Walk in the Woods by Lee Blessing is the next Playreaders production at St. Paul’s Church. It has been called “an American classic,” having been nominated for the Pulitzer, the Tony, and the Olivier awards. Time magazine called it “Not only the best American drama of the year but the best comedy as well.” It is a revealing debate on the hope and ultimate futility of high stakes politics. Two super power arms negotiators, one a cynical but charming Russian veteran, the other an idealistic American newcomer, meet informally in the woods after long frustrating hours at the negotiating table. It is not just a play about diplomacy and politics but of the desire and need for friendship on every level.

Since its first production on Broadway, A Walk in the Woods has been continually revived around the world. Recent productions have been staged in London, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and last year in a triumphant return to the New York stage. It has even been adapted for the India-Pakistan conflict with a major production in Mumbai. The Playreaders production will feature two veterans of San Miguel de Allende theater: Marthe Frazier as the Russian and David Galitsky as the American. YaYa does lights and sound, and B.C. May is the director. St. Paul’s Church is located at Cardo 6. Tickets are 20 pesos.
