October Pets of the Month

From the SPA

By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero

This is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, so how about choosing Lala and Suki? They are six-month-old beautiful Lab mix sisters, and both are going to be large! They were hand-raised by Sociedad Protectora de Animales (SPA) staff members after they were abandoned, along with two other siblings, when they were just a couple of weeks old. Now happy, healthy, and energetic youngsters, they are devoted to each other and also are very fond of people, toys, and treats. These two need a lot of exercise and would be great for owners who like to spend a lot of time outdoors or in a place with a large, protected outdoor area. They are smart and loyal, and have been responding well to training. If you are looking for a young, intelligent, large dog to become a treasured member of your family, you can’t go wrong with one (or both) of these girls.

Please also consider adopting a shelter cat, even though it’s not their noted month. Our one-year-old Casper was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was caught up in a neighborhood roundup meant for feral cats to be neutered and released. Leaping out of the trap into the arms of the veterinarian, purring and begging for attention, it was obvious he was as far from feral as possible. This handsome white boy with cinnamon ears and lovely blue eyes is very affectionate and just waiting to be discovered. So, maybe he was at the right place at the right time after all!

Five-month-old Kenny (Roo) was left in a box with his brother at a local animal lover’s house, who then brought both to us. Peeking into the box, we expected to see two very stressed cats, but instead we were greeted by loud purring and having our hands licked. Unusually tranquil from the start, this tabby boy is our biggest lap hound, stretching out and wanting his tummy petted, his purrs a constant. He has a great paternal side too, allowing the smallest kittens to snuggle with him.
