If you’ve recently undergone a major life transition, such as relocation to Mexico, divorce, retirement, or death in the family, you may be in “transition shock!”!

It’s a well-known phenomenon and can be painfully difficult to get through. Even the smaller transitions can be like mini-deaths and can traumatize the hardiest of us. We’ve all been through them, but sometimes we get stuck and can’t seem to sail our way out of the doldrums.

Some transitions are self-imposed—for instance relocation to a foreign country—and some are involuntary—like death in the family, ill health, job loss—but either way they present challenges that you can’t ignore.

You may have set out to change your lifestyle and find you are going nowhere—too much Internet, TV, and you are feeling frustrated. Or your life may have come crashing down around your head and you are struggling to find meaning and joy.

Different people react to transition in different ways. Some of us sink into the blues, feeling bored and unmotivated. Others feel confused and overwhelmed by what has happened and what is to come. Still others get stuck in overwhelm, racing to stay busy in order to avoid the uncomfortable feelings and emotions that their changed situation might bring up.

All of these modes can leave a person feeling stuck and dissatisfied. But how can we shift the situation?

A first step is to recognize that you may be in “Transition Shock” and to understand that you are experiencing a natural cycle in the human experience. Forgive yourself and understand that this is a temporary state.

Fortunately, there are concrete steps you can take to speed up the painful stages of transition and take advantage of the chance to redesign your life. Transition times can be devastating, but they also represent great opportunities for transformation.
