Justice for Cecil the Lion

Cecil the Lion

By David Johanssen

The world was shocked when a bow hunter shot Cecil the lion, one of the most famous animals in Zimbabwe’s national parks, on July 1. The American paid US$55,000 for a hunting permit to shoot the 13-year-old big cat. The killing drew international media attention and sparked outrage among animal conservationists, politicians and celebrities, as well as a strong negative response against the killer. The Zimbabwean government has stated it will seek extradition.
