Tomorrow’s Leaders Today: José Luis Bustamante González
By Robin Loving Rowland
Jóvenes Adelante selects the brightest local high school students with the greatest financial need and gives them university scholarships, a laptop, a mentor, life skills, a professional network, English training, and when necessary, counseling. Eighty-five percent of our students graduate, as compared with 20 percent in the rest of Mexico, 55 percent in Canada, and 60 percent in the US.
This is one in a series of profiles of our students. We offer it in thanks to this community for its support of our students.
Jose Luis Bustamante González, 18, is on track to be a mechanical engineer who will seek work in the aerospace, automotive, or medical fields when he graduates from the Instituto Tecnológico de Querétaro in 2021. And, with a current grade point average of 9.1 (on a scale of 10), it’s likely he will succeed.
And what does success mean to Jose Luis, who has a background in construction, likes math, drawing, design, music, sports, and fixing electronics, and whose father makes less than US$400 per month? “I’m a very responsible survivor who is seeking a better future with stable work that can sustain me,” said Jose Luis. “I don’t want to do things in a middling way, but to be active and do things that are distinctive. I want a house, a car, to open doors and never close them, to perhaps be my own boss one day, but we’ll see what opportunities arise along the way.”
Meanwhile, this student who has won local and regional awards in math, is asked by his teachers to help his fellow students as well. He likes challenges and only asks for motivation from others to achieve his goals. If you would like to offer motivation to José Luis, who has basic English skills, you may contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
