SPA’s September Pets of the Month

By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero

The Sociedad Protectora de Animales (SPA) is the only no-kill animal shelter for dogs and cats in San Miguel. For more than 30 years we have been taking care of an average of 100 animals waiting for forever homes. Each month we feature two dogs and two cats in our Pets of the Month promotion.

Both September cats share a storied background, so here is their tale about tails. Isaac, our handsome tuxedo-style black and white two-year-old male, was unfortunately the victim of an auto accident. Luckily for him, the only damage was to his tail. He still has feeling in part, but surgery has been scheduled to remove the lifeless last few inches. We think he will look pretty dashing with a bobbed tail, and it won’t detract from his urbane good looks. Although past kittenhood, Isaac has not given up his juvenile sense of play, leaping high into the air after his favorite wand toys, tiring out the volunteers.

Poor Charly, just a baby and was attacked by a dog, and luckily for him, managed to escape quickly, with only his tail badly damaged. Surgery was performed, removing just a little of the tip, so Charly doesn’t have a stumpy tail, more a three-quarter, rather stylish— looking tail. Despite this traumatic start to life, three-month-old Charly hasn’t let it interfere with his jubilant approach to life. This little black kitten is a perfect combo of affection and playfulness.

Our September dogs, Precious and Dulce, have no tail issues at all. Dulce, a white Lab mix, came to us almost two years ago and is now about four years old. She was a San Antonio neighborhood favorite, but wasn’t faring all that well on the streets. Medium-sized and beautiful, she has blossomed into a funny, happy lady who revels in love and responds with complete devotion. She needs access to a large, enclosed, outdoor space and would be a great protector.

Precious was also a street dog that was being fed by neighbors when she came to us in 2013. Medium-large, she loves being petted and responds well to love, affection, and praise—eager to please. About five years old, smart and observant, she would be a loyal, devoted companion.

Adopt (400 pesos) any of these Pets of the Month during September and receive a free adoption kit. Preview all our available animals at (Adopt Me! pages) and meet them at Los Pinos 7, Monday-Saturday, 11-2, 152 6124.
