Promoting Literacy in San Miguel de Allende
By Linda Curran
Libros Sin Fronteras, A.C. is a not-for-profit association with three initiatives. First, we offer English classes to primary and secondary students, providing scholarships to defray the monthly tuition by 50 percent. Tuition monies purchase books. Second, we will soon implement a Bookmobile, housing the thousands of books purchased, that will reach schools in the outlying areas. We are in the process of purchasing a vehicle for this mobile library, thanks to the generous monetary gift from a local organization, 100 Women Who Care. Third, we will begin a student exchange program between motivated and aspiring Mexican and North American students in July 2016.
The English School, Aprendizaje del Inglés, Antonio Plaza 21, will begin another semester of English classes for primary and secondary students on Monday, September 8. Classes meet for an hour each day, Monday through Thursday. Registration will take place at the school the week prior to classes, Monday through Friday, August 31-September 5, 3-6pm. Again, scholarships are available to defray the monthly tuition by 50 percent, which increases the accessibility of English classes to local children. We are happy to welcome and mentor Eleanor Stevens, an aspiring young teacher from Sacramento, in the fall semester.
