Summer Literary Festival to Feature Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco

Richard Blanco

By Susan Page

Richard Blanco, President Obama’s second inaugural poet and the sensation of the last San Miguel Writers’ Conference, is returning to San Miguel the last weekend in August. He will present a keynote address on Friday evening, August 28, at 6pm at the Aldea Hotel. This will be an entirely different address from the one he presented here last February. It was common to hear people say, after his address at the Writers’ Conference, “That is the best speech I have ever heard.”

On Sunday, also at 6pm at the Aldea Hotel, Blanco will be interviewed on stage by the beloved writer Sandra Cisneros, for a lively and wide-ranging conversation. They will hold a similar conversation in Spanish on stage at Bellas Artes on Saturday evening.

The “My First Book Brunch,” at noon on Sunday, promises to be both elegant and intimate, when we honor Mr. Blanco at the Rosewood Hotel. The brunch is a benefit for the Literary Sala’s reading appreciation program for young children in an underserved community near San Miguel, where children do not have books or magazines in their homes, and are thrilled to hold a book, turn the pages, and be read to—sometimes for the first time ever. We hope this brunch will support the program for an entire year, and possibly even allow us to expand it to other communities. Blanco is a warmhearted, brilliant, and very approachable person. The brunch is an opportunity to be up-close-and-personal with him.

The weekend is also a rare opportunity for writers. Blanco will present a three-hour workshop for writers on Saturday morning. Bring your memoir, poetry, fiction, or non-fiction project, and enrich your project with feedback and ideas from a writing genius. Blanco is also available for individual consultations with poets and writers, an extraordinary opportunity.

In connection with Blanco’s appearance in San Miguel, the Literary Sala has created a community-wide San Miguel Summer Read. We encourage everyone to read Richard Blanco’s enchanting memoir, The Prince of Los Cocuyos. Copies are available in the Tienda at La Biblioteca or in the Sala Literaria at Bellas Artes from 10am to 2pm daily.
