Laugh Lines: Three Short Comic Plays
By Phoebe Greyson
Continuing Playreaders’ summer of short humorous plays, this week’s offering features playwrights Elaine May, Christopher Durang, and Federick Stroppel. The evening opens with Elaine May’s The Way of All Fish, a study in the surprisingly transient nature of power. Gerri Baruch and Kate Rowland take the roles of a secretary and her well connected boss, each determined to prove to the other that however power is obtained, it is just as quickly lost.
Three Short Comic Plays
Wed, Aug 19 and Thu, Aug 20, 7:30pm
St. Paul’s Parish Hall
Calle Cardo 6
The next play is a short piece by Frederick Stroppel, entitled Chocolat. The tongue-in- cheek repartee between the keenly observant detective and the evasive Ms. Colby will particularly delight fans of British mystery series. Lou Barranti plays the detective and Gerri Baruch plays the endlessly inventive widow.
Finally, an offering by Christopher Durang, Wanda’s Visit, tops off the evening with the same quirky, improbable story line that we have come to expect from Durang. Kate Rowland plays the quietly suffering wife, Gerri Baruch plays the obliviously invasive old high school flame, and Lou Barranti plays the somehow completely ineffectual husband. Don Neiglos does lights and sound, and I direct.
