Mental Strength in the 21st Century

Phackchok Rinpoche

By Frank Simons

The Meditation Center presents the video lecture series Mental Strength in the 21st Century, parts three and four, “Energize Your Mind” and “Befriend Your Mind,” by Phakchok Rinpoche. Divining the source of 21st century stress has become perhaps the most popular wild-goose chase of our time. Is technology the culprit? Overwork? Our unrealistic expectations? Whatever it may be, the heightened strain of our crazy-busy lives calls for a simple antidote that Buddhists have known about for centuries: mental discipline. In this retreat, the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Phakchok Rinpoche shares five tips that will fortify your mind against the ever-proliferating anxieties of our brave new world.

Phakchok Rinpoche was born in 1981 and is a lineage holder of the Profound Treasures of Chokgyur Lingpa from the Nyingma School. Rinpoche’s teaching style is direct, addressing the needs of those present; traditional, not compromising the methods of practice and transmission in the slightest; and, accessible, teaching the profound meaning in a way that is able to be understood and glimpsed by people of diverse backgrounds. Rinpoche’s life defines what it means to be a dharma practitioner in today’s world by emphasizing that a practitioner should find a balance in their life. There should be a base of study and contemplation in order to understand the profound views of the Buddha’s teachings, and practice should be emphasized in a way that genuinely reduces ego clinging and negative emotions through a range of methods and practices. Altruistic activity should address the needs of those in one’s community and beyond as an expression of the compassion and wisdom cultivated in practice. These are some of the main principles that Rinpoche practices and teaches to his own students.

There will be a discussion period after the video. Presentations of the Meditation Center are offered without charge. Donations are gratefully accepted.
