Longtime Residents’ Time for a Home

From the SPA

By Megan Gabel

As a no-kill shelter, the SPA provides food, veterinary care, and a safe place for our cats and dogs until they are adopted. Sometimes that turns out to be a long-term commitment. Five dogs have been our residents for far too many days. To become part of a family, they each need a patient, understanding owner. You?

Güera has been waiting for a home for 2,048 days. Small/medium sized, she is a lovely dog, about seven years old, a little afraid of strangers and sometimes not too fond of other dogs. She has soulful, piercing, devoted eyes and a loving heart.

Shy has been waiting for a home for 1,734 days. A medium/large black teddy-bear of a dog, about six years old, she’s affectionate, adorable and, yes, shy—afraid of cars, but now more open to making new human friends. She gets along well with other dogs and gathers courage to walk on the street if it’s with a canine buddy.

Susie has been waiting for a home for 1,561 days. About six-and-a-half, medium/large, a lover of puppies and teenage dogs, she’s smart, alert, attentive, observant, strong, protective, and full of kisses (if you’re lucky). Sometimes, boys and men are not her favorite, but there are plenty of male volunteers she loves; she’s selective. For a woman alone, she’d be perfect.

Rita has been waiting for a home for 1,554 days. She loves getting attention and giving affection to friends. Small/medium, a little over four, she’s afraid of the street, but will venture out with some coaxing. She’d just as soon keep you company in a quiet place rather than face those whizzing cars.

Chikis has been waiting for a home for 1,549 days. About five-and-a-half, small/medium Chikis is a performer. She can sit, lie down, heel, and she will come next to your side and sit when told “by me.” She’s outgoing and friendly to most people (canes scare her), walks easily on a leash, and is very happy when it’s her turn to go out and explore.

It’s difficult to do these animals justice on paper. We have spent time with them every day and have learned their little idiosyncrasies and how to deal with them. The love we get in return is well worth the time it takes to give them a chance. Check their videos on (Adopt me! [Dogs]) for insight into their personalities. Then please come to meet them at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday-Saturday, 11-2pm.
