Morgana’s Metamorphosis

By Jesús Aguado

Morgana has always been an opera singer. Nevertheless, she had to cross the ocean to follow her dream and become a woman. Made in Bangkok is the documentary that tells the story of Saúl, who came back to San Miguel de Allende, now as Morgana, to present the outdoor projection of a short film during the recent Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF).

The director, Flavio Florencio, started filming the documentary about Saúl’s sexual reassignment in early 2012. In the film, Morgana narrates how she was accepted to participate in an international beauty pageant contest for transgender women. The contest would take place in Bangkok, Thailand, and the winner would be awarded US$15,000, an amount that could cover Morgana’s surgery in Thailand where, according to her, “there are the best surgeons in that field.”

Despite rain, the attendees stood and watched the movie from beginning to end in order to find out what would happen to Morgana on her journey, fighting to find her true identity. The audience wanted to know if she would be able to achieve her dream. What they saw is that she did not win the contest. The film ends with the arrival of Morgana at her family’s house in San Miguel de Allende. She plans to tell them what happened over the last three years. The door opens, and the credits show.

For Atención, metamorphic Morgana commented that her situation is still under discussion with her family because they are still processing her change. She also commented that she is happy now that the Mexican Supreme Court has approved same-sex marriages. She remarked that through art (with her music and voice), she will keep fighting for LGBT rights. She said in addition that in the near future, two CDs are coming out with singles performed by her.

At the end of Made in Bangkok, Morgana presented some arias, among them a remix of “La Habanera” from the opera Carmen, and closed with her rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” by Dolly Parton.
