Art in Centro—An Eye for the Best
By Mike Litchfield
Anew annual summer show is about to hit the art scene here in San Miguel. On August 7, 8, and 9, “Art in Centro” will be held on the north side of the Jardín, in the SMA Tourist Office patio and gallery.
Art in Centro
Fri, Aug 7 – Sun, Aug 9, 11am-6pm
Tourist Office Patio
Plaza Principal 10
Admission is free
Each artist in the show was hand-picked by master ceramicist Peter A. Davis because “it is art of the highest quality and, to my mind, it strikes a chord in your soul. Even when a piece of art appears most spontaneous, there is a highly educated mind and eye at work behind it all.”
Davis knows what he’s talking about. A recent New York transplant, he created and ran the annual Clay Festival exhibit in NYC for seven years. He was also a ceramics instructor at NYC’s Greenwich House Pottery, the 63rd St. Y, and the JCC for 14 years.
“The artists in this show,” Davis adds, “are represented in galleries and museums all over the world to say nothing of private collections, because their work is unique. You won’t find the commonplace here. Even the space is wonderful. The tourist office’s airy cobblestone patio will have groupings of textured ceramic plates, high-end jewelry, fine photography, and exquisitely rendered drawings and prints. The two large gallery spaces on the left will feature dynamic modern painters, a colorful storyteller illustrator, evocative portraits, classic San Miguel photography, local weavers, and intricate ceramic sculptures. The variety of the work is just stunning.”
