Identifying San Miguel’s Virgins

By Joseph Toone

Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears in San Miguel in many different images. Her age, skin color, clothing, and the like varies according to attributes that the particular image projects. La Biblioteca is offering a one-hour interactive workshop that will enable you to identify these various images that appear in niches, buses, fashion, and, of course, churches throughout the city. The images are celebrated with processions, fireworks, food, and dancing throughout the year.
