Danzón, the Sound of Silence
By Leonardo Rosen
I borrow the title of the old Simon and Garfunkle song, “The Sound of Silence,” to describe my current relationship, really non-relationship, with the Dirección de Educación, Cultura y Tradiciones of this city.

I have visited its office, left phone messages, and sent emails. I have proposed dates for “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina” in the Jardín Principal until September 2015. My communications have been professional and respectful in fluent Spanish. What response do I get? None, nada, zero, zilch; not even, “No.” I will not go any more to them like a beggar. In my book, no response is a negative response, in the absence of other information. Maybe a psychologist can explain this behavior to me. In any case, a new government takes over in October; I must negotiate with the new guys as I have had to do every three years. I’m old, but I plan to stick around to do so again.
However, we do have some non-governmental events coming up. First, the Club de Danzón Mercerina appears on Friday, July 24, at 5:30pm in an exhibition of all of the classes and workshops of El Sindicato, Recreo 4, 152 0131. Then, on Saturday, July 25, at 6pm in the Cardo parking lot, we appear in the Artesanos por la Tierra fair, which has arts and crafts, food, entertainment, and free admission, 121 3263. Later on, we present “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables” on Saturday, August 8, at 8pm at El Sindicato. With a little help from the Bee Gees, you see that we’re “Stayin’ Alive”!
Muchas gracias to all of our faithful friends for your support for seven years. I send you Palabras de Amor (a danzón title which means words of love).
