A Celebration in St. Paul’s

On Sunday, July 12, as part of the regular 10:30am service at St. Paul’s Church, the five-year-old students of Centro Infantil San Pablo ( CISP) and Sigmund Shalom Freud Escuela commenced their promotion to advanced education with a memorable graduation ceremony.

Proud parents, family members, and friends filled the church sanctuary to capacity. The graduates, donned adorably in white mortarboards and gowns with blue trim, entered the church to join in the weekly passing of peace among the congregation. Directora Patricia Palacios Cortez then called each child to the altar, where they were handed diplomas and blessed by Bishop William Gregg. Several of the graduates read messages of gratitude to the excited onlookers.

Following the service on the church lawn, chosen graduates passed the Mexican flag, and with the flag, symbolically, the academic torch, to some of the four-year-old students who will graduate next year. Spectators joined in saluting and singing the Mexican National Anthem.

After the performance, the party began in earnest. The girl graduates emerged in fluffy pink dresses and the graduating boys joined them wearing dress shirts, ties, and suit trousers. There was music, dancing, and the exchange of gifts, including gifts to volunteers who work so diligently to make the school program possible.

In the church’s Parish hall, cake, empanadas, and punch were served, and the graduates were treated to a festive lunch.

The morning was an outstanding event. Now on to August, a new school year, and a new crew of well-schooled and eager students being prepared for first grade.

CISP provides early education for underprivileged children.  Founded by St. Paul’s Anglican Church in 2001, over 240 five-year-olds have successfully completed our three-year program. Sponsorship for a child is always welcome and donations are appreciated. Advisory Committee members are often needed. For additional information, go to or email us at
