Activities for School Vacation

By Sandra Ríos

Now that school holidays have begun, here are some ideas for fun for both parents and children.

A prime attraction of this area is its beautiful landscapes and mountains. To enjoy them, we suggest taking a trail ride. This tour takes you over rocks, near canyons and rivers, and close to the flora and fauna. The tour includes transportation to a ranch located about 45 minutes from San Miguel. At the ranch you will be assigned a horse, and you’ll also receive riding instructions. Then start your tour of the plains bordering the canyon to the river, where you may find crystals and geodes. Follow the tour and return to the ranch for a delicious meal of tortillas from the comal, fresh ranchero cheese and organic beans from the ranch, quesadillas, nopales, rice, fresh salsas, guacamole, and salad. The total duration of the tour is about 5 hours.

Another option for the family to enjoy is the medicinal hot springs. The ideal place for this is the spa Xote Parque Acuático. Here there are water games, extensive gardens, waterfalls, and gardens. You may bring a ball and play in the gardens. And if you want to have a picnic, there are areas for campfires and grills for cooking meats and vegetables. If picnicking is not on your agenda, you’ll find a fast food restaurant with quesadillas, burgers, and hot dogs.

Finally, if you want to do something more cultural, we suggest a tour of some of San Miguel’s museums. The Museo de La Máscara presents a wide variety of original masks from every region of Mexico. The Museo del Juguete has handmade toys that show Mexican culture and customs. To know more about the life and work of Ignacio Allende, leader of Mexico’s fight for independence, stop at the Museo Histórico de San Miguel de Allende, which was once the Allende family home.

Museo de la Máscara, Cuesta de San José 32, Colonia Azteca. By appointment, 154 4324
