Marcia Coppel’s Whimsical Nudes at The Gallery at La Conexión
By Roy Sorrels
Artist Marcia Coppel moved here from the wilds of Washington, DC. After five years of soaking in the color and beauty of San Miguel and studying with Dennis Pohl and Carolyn King, she moved back to Washington, DC. She now spends part of each year here.
Fri, Jul 3, 6-8pm
The Gallery of La Conexión
Her ink drawings will be on display at The Gallery of La Conexión on Aldama 3, with an opening celebration where you can meet the artist from 6-8pm on July 3. The exhibit will then running daily until August 3.
Coppel’s drawing technique grows partly from the minimalist movement, with each nude drawing often moving smoothly from a mood of antic playfulness to languid sensuality.
Because of the absence of overwhelming detail, viewers are invited to enter the drawings and to fill in the mood and meaning from their experience of their own bodies and other bodies they’ve encountered along the way. Each drawing then becomes a unique adventure, an artistic dialogue between artist and viewer.
The drawings are made with colored ink and graphite on white paper, 11×14”. I recommend you attend the opening or go early in the show’s run so that the drawing that touches your funny bone or your heart is still available.
