Ghosts of a Feather
By Dan Klein
B’Nai Or Art Gallery Group presents Alex Engel’s second photographic mixed media collection, “Ghosts of a Feather.” In this collection, the photographs were taken on Friday, March 3, in San Miguel de Allende during the celebration of El Señor de la Conquista (Lord of the Conquest) and the image of Christ.

During this colorful celebration, hundreds of local communities from far and wide dressed in traditional Aztec costumes come to dance and chant day and night in the Jardín (the principal square).
Engel was able to capture the details of movement and drama of this epic tradition. He then projected the images on various woods, such as tree trunks and tree stumps. Using an array of optics, Alex used caustic effects that allowed the projection light to refract and create colorful patches on the surface of the photographs. This “in-camera” approach rendered organic and natural multilayered details impossible to attain using traditional Photoshop techniques.
Engel also delivers his work on acrylic, allowing him to create multilayered natural elements for the backgrounds. This technique increases the light sensitivity and glow of the photographs, which then bring the works to life in a complex holographic way.
This collection provides a powerful perspective on the strong traditions of Mexican culture in a cinematic, stylized way.
