María Jimena Entices San Miguel
By David Johanssen
María Jimena has delighted audiences across Mexico with her soulful cabaret performances of classics like “La Vie en Rose,” as well as traditional and contemporary songs from Mexico, Spain, and the Caribbean. She is truly a “musical shaman” who opens portals between herself and her audiences. María says that “connecting with my audience on an intuitive level is the most important thing because the experience is created between the audience and the performer.”

Jimena’s vocal style was nurtured in the bel canto tradition of classical music. As a child in Costa Rica, she participated in the children’s program of Costa Rica’s National Symphony and later graduated from the music school of La Salle University in Cuernavaca. “The coolest part of this,” she says, “is seeing how the audience connects emotionally to me and to each other, so that by the end of the show, everyone is relaxed and in a good space.”
Join us Saturday, June 27, at 7:30pm, for a live concert with María Jimena on guitar and ukulele accompanied by the gypsy jazz guitarist Alex Camarena. Together, the passionate duo will play Manouche jazz, Hot Club jazz, or gypsy jazz along with some selections showcasing María’s classical vocal style. Tickets are 150 pesos.
Tuesday, June 30, you are invited to join us at 7:30pm for the Open Mic Sixth Anniversary Concert. Six years ago, Elsanne Barrows and Phil Roger were talking over coffee at El Viejo Topo and decided to ask about an open mic on the small stage there. They shared a common vision of providing a supportive and welcoming atmosphere in which people could share their creative energies. They later found the ideal space at the Shelter Theater, where the creative spirit in all of us could be celebrated. John Wharton very graciously welcomed the event. Each week is different and frequently surprising! Open Mic continues to flourish and celebrate live performance in a very comfortable and authentic manner. The 30-peso ticket includes a drink. Callejón Flamenco is a moving performance presenting a selection of palos (traditional flamenco styles expressed through guitar playing, singing, and dance). It immerses us in the most intense emotions with the passionate outbursts characteristic of this musical genre—a fusion of Roman, Arabic, Indian, Egyptian, and Roma elements which, combined with the culture of Andalusia, has resulted in a unique art form all its own. Wednesday, July 1, at 7pm. Tickets are 150 pesos.
Shelter Theater is part of the Shelter VG4 Cultural Center, located at Vicente Guerrero 4, a 10-minute walk from the Jardín. Telephone 154 7524 or visit sheltervg4.com to see upcoming films and events. Taxi concierge service is available to/from the Shelter.
