Tennis Camp for Kids in July!
By Elsmarie Norby
Ojalá Niños will offer a chance to 40 children from the rural community of San Miguel Viejo to learn to play tennis, July 24-26.
Thu, Jul 23, 5pm
Salida a Celaya Km 1.5
This summer the event will be held at San Miguel’s municipal sports center, La Deportiva, with professional tennis players giving the children the opportunity to experience this great sport. Each child will have a new racquet, which they can keep after the camp if they decide to continue the training at the deportiva during the year. There will be no charge to children or their families.
This idea came to Ojalá from Barry Annino, tennis pro from Dallas, who wants to share the sport with children who would otherwise not have the opportunity. Barry was a poor kid who was given a tennis racquet at age 11, and it formed the rest of his life in countless positive ways. Now he is giving back, and the plan is to grow the camp every year to include many more children in and around San Miguel, helping to develop a culture of personal pride and self-confidence among children who are less advantaged.
Ojalá Niños is a non-profit program that provides free daily year-round classes to over 100 children in San Miguel Viejo. Believing that true education comes from our inherent curiosity to explore and discover and, therefore, learn, Ojalá offers space, materials, ideas, and guidance in the arts, music, literacy, environment, health, and social service. Thanks to Barry Annino, we can now begin a foray into the world of sports.
In order to achieve this and make it successful, your support is needed in several areas: sponsorship of one child US$100; participation on a committee for promotion; transportation; and planning the opening celebration event on July 23, when there will be a party and an auction of many desirable items to benefit programs.
