Growing Up at the SPA
From the SPA
By Megan Gabel
Sisters Spice, Cinder, and Maya met their new non-blood sister, Darcy, at the SPA in early March, each two and a half months old. They began by living in our Puppy World, with its nice-sized open area. Here, puppies can run freely and play with toys, their puppy friends, and volunteers who come to spend time with them. It’s a fun stage for them and for the rest of us who enjoy being swarmed by the throng of puppies who run up to greet us, smothering us with kisses and vying for attention.
As the puppies near five months old, we start introducing them to the real world, putting harnesses on them and taking them outside for a walk on leash. It is so much fun to witness their first ventures. Some are very brave; others sort of slink along, peering from the ground up, to see what’s going on and whether it’s actually worth trying to walk a bit. When they do walk, they prance from side to side (we have to be careful not to trip over them), looking, exploring, enjoying.
Ultimately, they move out of Puppy World into their own casita (sometimes they share; it makes it less scary). With real collars on, they are put on our dog-walking board for volunteers to take them out for a walk each day. They start going to the dog exercise area in the back twice a day for about an hour each time.
So, now it’s no more Puppy World for Cinder, Darcy, Spice, and Maya—they’ve graduated. Each has already learned how to sit on command (what a smart group!). Spice is the most self-confident and is energetic, curious, and playful. Maya, Cinder, and Darcy are tied for being the most affectionate. They love to cuddle and nestle against you. Each of these puppies is small but still growing, and each is delightful and would be a lovely addition to any family.
Meet them at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, Monday-Saturday, between 11am and 2pm, 152 6124. Please help us feed these beauties and all our dogs and cats (approximately 100 in total) by contributing to the Pet Food Money Bank (at the office, online, by check). Details are here: http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/pet-food-money-bank. Please let others know about our goal to raise 120,000 pesos/US$8,500 to apply to our annual food cost and give them the opportunity to contribute too.
