Father’s Day Ideas

By Ron Smith

If you have younger kids, then dads can initiate a few of these ideas while older kids can take charge themselves.

What some dads like to get

So a great gift is a tool or gadget that helps Dad with a project around the house. I know, I know…dads have other skills than just fixing things, but many of us like to feel useful. My favorite gift? A swiss army knife or one of those multi-use pliers that have screwdrivers and scissors. We lose them and always need another one.

What some dads like to do

Doing something together that gives dad a chance to show his skill at something is great. You may not be a fan of chess or woodcarving or golf. But a golfing dad would love to take you to a driving range and hit a few balls. He would enjoy showing you how to do the basics, tee up the ball, grip the club, and take a swing.

Ask your dad how he and your mom met. Get into the details. What was the day like? What led up to the moment they met? What were his first impressions?

Ask your dad about the day you were born. Again, ask for the details. Get your dad to remember how he felt about your birth. If your kids are younger, dads can tell their child the “story of their birth”. My daughter never got tired of asking me about the night she was born.

Cook something together. A lot of dads love to grill meat, so perhaps a barbecue would be fun to prepare together. Easier are happy-face pancakes. Check it out on YouTube and remember, you do the dishes and clean up the mess.

Finally, watch the movie Parenthood with Steve Martin and talk about the funny situations that Steve Martin has to deal with in the move.  And finally, on Saturday, the day before Father’s Day, come learn and climb with us.
