Alicia has thrilled worldwide audiences with her extraordinary, transcendent interpretations of the drama and sensuality of the Argentine tango. Trained in classic ballet since she was four years old, Alicia has a commanding stage presence that matches the power of her operatically trained lyric soprano voice.
Ken Bichel, an Emmy Award-winning composer, performer, and resident of San Miguel, said of her: “Alicia Rappoport is an Olympian. She has the body of an athlete, the voice of a goddess, the concentration of a gold medalist, eyes that pierce your soul.
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Alicia fled both Argentina and Chile due to military takeovers. Dictators twice banned the tango in Argentina, in the 1940s and again in the 1970s. It became the underground music of anger and dissent for the popular masses.
An Argentinean historian wrote, “Censored songs became a memory aid to remember the thousands of dead and missing the dictatorship left.” Alicia’s “Forbidden Tango” performance will commemorate that period with interpretations of the music of the time.
Her “Tribute to Piazzolla” will celebrate the music of one of the greatest tango composers and bandoneon (a type of concertina) players of the last century. Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) combined his love of tango with classical training, a passion for jazz, experimentations in sound, and lyrics from famous poets of Latin America.
Alicia is a leading interpreter of “New Tango.” Joseph McClain, founder and former general director of the Austin Lyric Opera, as well as Opera San Miguel and its Concurso San Miguel, imaginatively directs both performances.
A special early booking ticket price of 250 pesos is available until June 30. After July 1, ticket prices are 300 pesos, with two tickets for the two different performances at the special price of 450 pesos. Tickets may be purchased at Galería Izamal, Mesones 80, 11am to 3pm and 4pm to 8pm. For information, call the Playhouse at 415 154-1018 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
