Jóvenes Adelante Strengthens Leadership and Staffing
By Robin Loving Rowland
It’s a most exciting time at Jóvenes Adelante, which gives university scholarships to the brightest and most financially challenged students. After 15 years of success, including an 85 percent university graduation rate of more than 200 students served, we now have two paid staffers. Angie Argüelles García began heading our administrative team in September, and Josy de Alba Rábago joined us this spring to support student programs. You will love them both!
The sustainability model that we have created includes a president-elect, a president, and a past president, making us three times as strong in leadership. In addition, half of our vice presidential roles (fundraising, student programs, administration, and marketing), have co-vice presidential positions to ensure that when one is not available, the other can be (you know how mobile San Miguel is!). That means that we have lots of openings for lots of volunteers who, like our founders (think Helen Morris, Peggy Bell, Betse Davies, Bob Hesdorfer), are transforming more lives through education, which is our new slogan. While we are casting our net to fill these extra positions, I am filling the role of interim president, supported by past-presidents Sue Leonard and Stephanie Hough.
We invite you to participate with us in a large variety of volunteer, donor, and mentor positions. If you don’t find what you are seeking, please ask us, as we are constantly developing new opportunities!
