Stories of Freedom, Leonardo Samuel Pérez Lugo

By Dante Gabriel Jiménez Muñoz Ledo

Samuel, as the artist signs his own paintings, is also what we call the person that we’ve known and loved for almost a lifetime. He has a personal story that at first sight may seem ordinary; however, between the rows of an agricultural landscape at the Plancarte community in the city of Celaya, where he was born, he had his first awareness of life, love, nostalgia, and freedom. That is the same place where he lived with many shortcomings, particularly family stability. From that place, Samuel stood forever like a large tree overcoming all obstacles. The more gales that came to him and his loved ones—particularly his mother, his grandparents and cousins—his family roots rushed and grew thick between the rich black soil of the Bajío to hold on to what we can now see reflected in his paintings.

His current work, full of landscapes, takes us through a dusty and sunny picnic. From the first moment that we enter the scenes of the grass, the tops of sidewalks, and paths with trees and ditches, we can feel as if we are walking through the plots of a farmland, playing for a while in a group, eating and drinking with family and friends, and then relaxing in the shade, napping or following the family talk after lunch, looking at the sky, guessing shapes and colors in the clouds that pass by or stay still. We can feel like walking barefoot, pants rolled up, splashing at the river shore. And then we return home, full of sunshine, wind, laughter, memories, secrets, and love.

Let’s get into Samuel’s work, pausing in his portraits, his self-portrait, and in “We Are One,” a painting about an old man that evokes nostalgia, melancholy, and sadness, but full of dignity and nobility. What is it that this character has inside?

Let’s go and enjoy our own perceptions; let’s be free in the country landscapes to enjoy and rest as we think about life itself. Join us as we introduce Samuel Pérez Lugo to the magic of San Miguel de Allende. Come meet the artist and see his incredible creations at a cocktail reception and art exhibit.
