Celebrating in the Valle del Maíz
By Sandra Ríos
Like every previous year the Valle del Maíz had its main celebration. During nine days, the neighbors of this important part of San Miguel celebrated the Holy Cross and the beginning of the rainy season with ceremonies, music, and ancestral rites.
For 25 years the arribeño huapango group, Los Leones de la Sierra de Xichú, has participated as the highlight of this local fiesta; on this occasion the band gathered many locals together to dance and celebrate to the rhythm of guitars, violins, and poetry along with the famous mojigangas. This is the largest festival in this neighborhood that has devotions, customs, and very powerful and touching celebrations.
All attendants participated in the festivities such as the “guerritas,” the parade, and the play “the hidden treasure.”
