A Special Delivery
From the SPA
By Joan DiPiero
Throughout the years, kittens have shown up at the SPA in many ways: alone, with one or two or more siblings, and sometimes even with Mom in tow. Never Dad, however! This April we experienced a different arrival, a heavily pregnant lovely girl named Simone. No more than a kitten herself at about eight months old, she was uncomfortable and clearly stressed. She wanted lots of attention and petting. With the birth imminent, we were concerned that she might be too young and inexperienced to handle the demands of motherhood. Arriving one morning, we were delighted to see that she had given birth to four kittens during the night. Far from looking helpless, she was nursing her babies, cleaning them, and looking extremely confident. Her maternal instincts had definitely kicked in, and for the next several weeks we were treated to a course on nurturing and kitten development. From tiny babies with eyes closed, wobbly attempts at walking and fear of straying too far from Mom, to steadier limbs, rollicking play, serious naptimes, and ravenous appetites, these four babies have given us hours of entertainment as well as a Kitten101 class.
Weeks have passed, and we can’t keep these cuties all to ourselves, so it’s time to share them with the outside world. Samson, a boy with sleek black fur and button eyes is the strongest of the group, the largest, and the first to explore his surroundings. Male Sawyer is a delightful hodgepodge of black and white spots. Seamus has cute gray Mickey Mouse ears decorating his white fur. Sugar is the only girl, a petite calico, who makes sure she has her fair share of food, pushing her bigger brothers away. All four are affectionate and playful and a joy to be around. And let’s not forget their wonderful mom, our special girl Simone, gentle and loving, who with her expressive eyes tells us her story, hoping for a happy ending.
Meet Simone and her babies at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday-Saturday between 11am and 2pm.
