For those of you who have enjoyed the band’s sock hops in the past, the May 30 show will present something very new and special. Siempre Swing will add Janis Joplin to their patented mix of Duke Ellington, Elvis Presley, and Perez Prado. Vocalist Carla Coto of Querétaro, star of the Janis Joplin Tribute Concert coming to the San Miguel Playhouse June 9, 16, and 20, will preview her exciting show. In Querétaro and other central Mexico cities, Carla and guitarist/arranger Rolando Gotes have presented the full tribute concert to crowds of 700 people. Siempre Swing is proud to be producing their show and backing them musically.
Formed two and a half years ago in the nurturing environment of El Sindicato, this versatile bicultural band of expat and Mexican musicians now has a repertoire of about 60 swing standards and oldies from “Satin Doll” to “Shake Rattle and Roll” with the additional spice of an occasional cumbia, cha cha, or rhumba to keep things interesting for dancers and the concert audience. The group has grown from a small ensemble to a full rhythm section of piano, guitar, double bass, and drum set anchoring the explosive sound of one of the longest horn lines in the area: an eight-man section of four saxes, two trumpets, and two trombones.
For the event, El Sindicato’s auditorium is converted into a dance club with a large dance floor, small tables, and concert seating, with the café serving refreshments. Barbara and David Ziff will give a free beginner’s swing dance lesson at 7:15pm; no partner is required. The music starts at 8pm.
