End: CIV Resist or Die is a recent documentary film by Franklin Lopez. The film focuses on the work of Derrick Jensen, a radical environmentalist. Jensen is a controversial figure involved in the Deep Green Resistance movement. In a nutshell, DGR has only one goal: the disruption and dismantling of industrial civilization, thereby removing the ability of the powerful to exploit the powerless and destroy the planet.
The film goes beyond an analysis of capitalism and civilization. Most of us are aware that the distribution of wealth is growing more lopsided every day. We know that thousands of species are becoming extinct every year. We know that climate change is already responsible for massive social and economic upheavals. We know that those in power have institutionalized violence through a legislative process they control. Jensen also has developed a critique of the mainstream environmental movement, the limitations of a strict adherence to the philosophy of nonviolence, and the wishful thinking of those putting their faith in the “green economy.”
For Jensen, it’s time to stop asking politely for our politicians to change their behavior and start acting in the best interest of the planet. They are incapable of making the radical changes it will take to save our world. With the convergence of severe climate change and the inevitable reality of not only peak oil, but also the diminishing availability of all earth’s natural resources upon which modern civilization is totally dependent, Jensen is convinced that the world is headed toward a monumental collapse.
Life as we know it is unsustainable. Yet there is a blind and frantic attempt to prop up a culture that is so deeply destructive. We find our corporations digging deeper for clean water. Drilling deeper for oil, gas, and essential minerals. Destroying pristine and ancient environments all for the sake of extending a doomed way of life for a few more short years.
Jensen asks us to take a hard look at the roots of a culture in deep crisis. His strategy for change is radical and controversial. He wants each of us to answer the question, what are you willing to do to dismantle a civilization that is raping Mother Earth? Join the discussion at OccupySMA. Our events are free.
