Activities for People with Dementia

The proposed activities and exercises can be used as an idea to be carried out by professionals or even by the primary caregiver, tailored to the needs of each patient. They are easy to perform without using any special material. Here are stimulating activities for four important areas for personal and social development:


Read the newspaper or magazines to maintain contact and attention
Ask how  to prepare a meal at home
Talk of technological advances since his youth
Keep abreast of the favorite sports
Sing, hum or whistle with him/her
Bring a seasonal item for about the next holiday to talk
View travel brochures and dream fantasy vacation
Sing hymns or songs old favorites
Bring photographs, postcards, maps, souvenirs, and discuss your travel
“Tell me more” … when he/she has a memory
Listen to musi
Appoint presidents
Remember the first day of school
Play guessing games
Read articles, books or religious or spiritual magazines
Talk about famous people
Remember favorite stories and memories

Brush, comb hair
Write in a blog relevant conversations each visit
Dress with his/her favorite clothes
Give a manicure
Coddle with cosmetics, perfumes or aftershave.
Bring a musical instrument and give him/her a private concert
Bring olfactory stimuli (spices, perfumes or flowers)
Give a hug at each visit
Stroke, and hold hands
Write or record the biography of the patiente. Give copies to family
Bring some favorite food
Read one or more poems each time you visit
Give a rich massage lotion to keep the skin soft


Dance to favorite music
Clean or sweep the garden or inside the piece
Work with him at some manual work
Water indoor plants or garden
Make a list to send Christmas cards
Bring a baby and help with care
Clear table
Play and organize poker chips
Arrange objects by shape and color
Play with coins, marbles or letters
Do crossword puzzles together
Make Christmas cards together
Try a new artistic choice, such as drawing, painting or sculpture
Bring a pet to take for a walk
Take a walk, sit in the garden
Write poetry or short stories with him
Play cards or board games
Bring a sewing box, buttons or tools to sort together
Fold clothes and towels
Make a family tree
Help write a letter, postcard or record a tape for family
Picnic inside with the favorite foods
Cut out pictures from magazines
Put coins in a jar
Arrange colored letters
Feed animals
Repair clothes with him/her
Make list of actresses, actors, movies and favorite songs
Plant and tend a garden or indoor garden together


Bring the grandchildren or some work they have done at school
Bring entertaining videos to watch together
Bring a pet to visit
Ask for help in planning the garden; look at a catalog of flower seeds
Read classic short stories
Identify states and capitals
Rent a video of an old movie favorite
See family photos
See old photographs of family and friends
Take pictures of the changing seasons and show them
Read weather forecast
Watch TV together and discuss about apparently
Bring a friend for a special meeting
Show magazines with great photos and color
Bring greetings in a video of family or friends to visit disabled
