Viceversa: Urban Culture for Youth

Learn about a week of urban culture for youth Tuesday, May 19, when José Luis Mendoza presents Viceversa at the Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende – Midday at Hotel Misión, Salida a Querétaro 1, from 12:30pm. The presentation will be free.

The Viceversa week will be May 18-24. It has been organized to bond youth – especially marginalized youth – in the exploration artistic and cultural variety in order to increase their social and economic wellbeing.

Activities during the week will include professional talks in which various aspects of urban culture will be discussed, from the academic to the practical; workshops focused on young people living in poor neighborhoods of San Miguel sharing techniques related to urban culture experiences; and artistic events. Additional workshops, exhibitions, concerts, talks, and other forms of artistic/cultural expression will be generated as a result of the week’s activities.

Collaborators include Allende la Cultura, the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Colegio de Jalisco, the Cuban Embassy in Mexico, El Sindicato, Espiral, the Guanajuato International Film Festival, La Biblioteca, Orquesta Basura, the Universidad Allende, the Universidad Lis de Veracruz, the University of Guanajuato, the University of León and Vía Orgánica, among others.

José Luis Mendoza Aubert is an actor, director, musicologist, film expert, technician and drama/visual arts teacher. He has worked for more than 35 years in a variety of cultural affairs in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Currently he is the director of art and culture director at La Biblioteca; a teacher of drama and fine arts in elementary, middle, high school and college in San Miguel; and a playwright and poet. In his spare time, he plays Veracruz Son Jarocho music with the group Son de San Miguel.

Mendoza founded and directs the theater company The Comedy of the Universe, presenting at least two large comedy shows per year. He is also a founding member and director of the theater group Sopa de Locos (Locos Soup). In addition, he is a founding member of the group Colectivo Allende la Cultura.

Previously, Mendoza was the artistic director of theatre at El Sindicato, a member of the board of directors at La Biblioteca, and a judge for the International Film Festival. For more information, contact
