Fur and Friends
By Carmine Ramble
As soon as I settled into San Miguel de Allende for my extended vacation, I searched the Internet for an animal shelter. I was hoping to find somewhere to volunteer, somewhere I could spend a few moments enjoying the animals and hopefully bringing some happiness to their lives as well. Through a quick Google search I found the Sociedad Protectora de Animales (SPA), so that’s where I headed. At the SPA I found much more than I had expected.
The facilities are quite nice, providing a comfortable home for the animals and also a nice area for volunteers to relax while enjoying the experience with the cats. The furry guests staying at the SPA are all very friendly and really appreciate the attention they get from the volunteers. The volunteers and staff are also very friendly. This is a great place to meet people and make new friends.
My time spent in the cattery was very enjoyable. Whether I was in the mood to play with the active cats or sit with the quieter cats, whether looking for the cute chaos of kittens or the more sedate grace of the mature cats, there were always many happy cats ready to suit my mood. With regular visits, I was able to get to know their characters and traits, and even had a fan group that would follow me around the kitten area. Others might point out that they followed everyone around, but it was still fun when it was my turn. One highlight of my cattery visits was playing with the cats and attracting an active group that would entertain me with their antics while enjoying themselves immensely. Another highlight was getting to know the friendly, outgoing cats that would come when their name was called. True bonds were formed.
Volunteer hours are Monday-Saturday, 11-2 at Los Pinos 7, 152 6124. The website has a map (www.spasanmiguel.org) and lots of good information about the SPA, including photos and bios of all animals available for adoption. Volunteering is simple: just fill out a quick form, get a short orientation, and you’re all set.
I can’t wait for my next visit to San Miguel de Allende, I’m looking forward to getting together with all my friends at the SPA, both furry and not. See you all in April!
