Concert in Santa Cruz del Chorro

By Christian Ricardo Patlán

The José Guadalupe Velázquez Guitar Ensemble will present a concert in the beautiful church of Santa Cruz del Chorro. They have appeared at the National and International Guitar Festival of Querétaro and in different venues in the state. The festival comprises guitarists from different academic levels playing music from different epochs from baroque to contemporary.

Besides enjoying an excellent concert, you can also enjoy the beauty of El Chorro, an area that has great historical importance to San Miguel de Allende. It was an area that supplied water to all of the town; so it was given the name of Chorro (a stream of water). When it could no longer supply the population, the place became a public bath (today we have only a few).

Fray Juan de San Miguel found this area and the chapel around 1542. Because it was not located in the center of San Miguel, this site was abandoned by the government and was not given the importance it had in the beginning.

This place has been sustained thanks to the generosity of people whose faith has preserved it as a religious and historical place. Sometimes from ignorance the local population and visitors don’t recognize the importance of this place. This clearest example of abandonment by those slated to safeguard such spaces is located where the natural spring used to be (now it is dry). There is a clock, which for some time had been installed in the house of culture in the city that even with the passage of time works correctly. Now this place is deserted and no one has access. There is a small door that always remains closed. These three places—the temple of the Holy Cross, the chapel of El Chorro, and the natural spring—have not been valued as the historic birthplace of San Miguel de Allende. While part of our history is recorded in books, another part is preserved in the monuments and places that remind us of that history.

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this concert in such a beautiful place. We hope to see you on April 24 at 6pm, in Santa Cruz del Chorro Church.
