Uncovering the Mysteries of the Aztecs

By David Johanssen

The ruins and fragments that remained of the Aztec civilization led archaeologists to dream and marvel at the achievements of the past. Eduard Seler was a prominent German anthropologist who made extensive contributions to the study of Mesoamerican cultures in the late 1800s. He was a poor man of ailing health, but he was supported for decades by his wife Cecillia, physically, intellectually, and financially. Her curiosity and drive, coupled with Eduard’s intellectual passion took them on a journey from Berlin to Mexico to decipher the codices of the Aztecs. Join us for a documentary and discussion Tuesday, April 7, at 5pm as Shelter presents Secrets in the Dust: Aztecs Sacrifice and Science. This is the story of how Seler cracked the code of the Aztec calendar, which revealed a great deal about their sacrificial rituals and temple-building cycles. 50 pesos.
