In Praise of Older Kittens
From the SPA
By Joan DiPiero
No cat lover can deny the appeal of young kittens. With their tumbling acts, leaping skills, wrestling feats, and exuberant personalities, they bring laughter and a smile to our faces. Not surprisingly, they are the first to be adopted, but as irresistible as they are, there can be reasons to resist. In most cases, their personalities are not quite fixed; the lap hounds might turn independent, the active ones might turn into couch potatoes, and the snuggle bunnies might become more aloof. If you want a certain personality and behavior in your adopted cat, we highly recommend adopting older kittens, those 6 to 12 months old, whose personalities are more certain and predictable. (Of course, we are talking about cats, so no warranties are given!) We have four of these special kittens for you to consider, all less than 12 months old; two of them more introverted and two more extroverted.
Our quieter duo is Barney and Jacaranda. Both of them are mellow and gentle, not calling attention to themselves, yet welcoming human touch, eagerly rolling over on their backs for some gentle tummy pets. Both of them are usually greeted with “aahs” from their visitors, charmed by their sweet dispositions. Barney is a light orange boy who is easy-going with the other cats although not too brave with some of the more aggressive boys. Jacaranda is a cream beauty with apricot markings who can be found in her favorite basket just waiting to be noticed despite her shyness.
Our extroverts, Georgie and Gonzalo, make their presence known the minute a person enters their area. Their greetings range from leaping into your arms or shoulders, or in the case of very special humans, a little balance act on the head. Not so interested in this up-close behavior? No problem. They will amuse each other by furiously chasing each other, rolling around with abandon. When exhausted, both boys will gladly sleep on your lap, affectionate as well as playful. Both are handsome guys. Georgie has a striped orange coat and Gonzalo is white with amazing dark olive green eyes.
The address of the SPA is Los Pinos 7, 152 6124 (map at www.spasanmiguel.org). Please visit these four, Monday to Saturday from 11am to 2pm, and know that what you see is what you get. If you relish surprises, however, we have some babies that will delight you. Either choice is a great one!
